The duties associated with supervising offenders often take place away from the office. The Department is committed to promoting new methodologies that support greater mobility for Agents in the community. In 2004, the Department was awarded funding by the United States Department of Justice under the Drug Control and System Improvement Program that allowed for the testing, evaluation, and implementation of mobile technology.
As a result of this funding, Agents were given IBM tablet computers that function like a desk-top computer when the Agent is in the office, but allows a component of the system to function as a portable computer tablet for use when the Agent is in the field. It also allows the Agent to download, transport and access offender information and pictures for reference while conducting community contacts.
Prior to going out into the field, Agents download offender information onto the portable tablet computer. While in the field, Agents enter all of the information gathered while interacting with offenders, law enforcement, victims and the public. Upon returning to the office, Agents upload the new information so that offender case records remain current. In July 2005, the Department received a second year of funding for this initiative which expanded the project and allowed the Department to purchase car mounts for the tablets. |
