Criminal Justice Academy

Job Opportunities

Agents with Governor Mark Sanford

Applicants for the Agent Career Track must hold at least a four-year degree from an accredited college or university.  Entry-level probation and Agents are Class-One Certified and must complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program at the Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia and the Department's Agent Basic Safety Training courses and on-the-job training. Only then can they be assigned a caseload of offenders.

Additionally:

  • They shall not have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or be subject to a criminal domestic violence restraining order. (Forfeiture of bond, a guilty plea, or a plea of nolo contendere is considered the equivalent of a conviction.)
  • They must complete a Fair Credit Reporting Act Disclosure authorization.
  • They will be fingerprinted for an FBI records check.

Upon meeting these requirements, agents receive their badges, and are sworn in and given the oath of office by a circuit court judge and the Department director at ceremonies held at the South Carolina Supreme Court.

Applicants interested in applying for the position of Entry Level Agent will be provided a state application (Form PD-10D), and a Probation and Parole Agent Entry Checklist (Form 1143). The applicant must be willing to certify he or she will perform all responsibilities listed on the checklist. For the checklist to be processed, it must be signed by the applicant.

To receive an Applicant Packet, contact the Office of Human Resources, (803) 734-9244.

Applicants must bring the completed state application and checklist and their certified college transcripts to a designated location to take a reading comprehension and vocabulary test. It will be the applicant's responsibility to forward a copy of his or her application to the counties of work preference upon being notified of passing the test. Applicants who fail the test twice must wait two years before re-applying. (Any applicant with prior Department service in the Agent Career track will not be required to retake the reading comprehension test.)

The Human Resource Office will enter the applicant's name and other identifying information - including test results - into the Department's Agent Application Database. The agent-in-charge may access the database when considering candidates for interview.

General Recruitment. The goal of any recruitment process is to generate a pool of qualified applicants. There is no minimum or maximum number of applicants to be included in an applicant pool. However, a competitive pool should reflect racial and gender diversity. Recruitment efforts will include sources or means by which this diversity can be achieved. All qualified applicants will be considered.
