PPP Agent Basic Training
Probation/Parole Agents and Offender Supervision Specialists (OSS) are required to complete the PPP Agent Basic Training Program, which provides an introduction to the Department as well as a thorough review of the requirements of the Agent and OSS positions.
This training is a 2-week classroom training held at the SC Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) and reviews the many facets, duties, and responsibilities of an Agent and OSS at the SC Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services.
Law Enforcement Training
All new Agents are required to complete a wide variety of Law Enforcement training. These trainings include, but are not limited to, Firearms, Defensive Tactics (DT), Taser, Arrest Scenario, Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVO), and Oleoresin Capsicum (OC).
| Firearms TrainingProbation/Parole Agents attend a 5-day training session which prepares them for law enforcement certification requirements and provides a foundation in the proficient use of their assigned firearm(s). Agents are required to demonstrate proficiency on an annual basis throughout their career.

| Arrest Scenario TrainingIn addition to PPP Agent Basic Training, new Agents receive training specifically addressing tactics to consider when serving process on offenders under the Department’s supervision. This training includes planning, risk analysis, safety, and any other operational procedures.

| Emergency Vehicle OperationsAll Agents must complete Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVO) training as part of their initial C-1 Certification. Agents receive an EVO update on an annual basis throughout their career. New Agents will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
- Threshold braking
- Evasive maneuvering
- Controlled braking
- Off-road recovery
- Precision maneuvering

| Defensive Tactics (DT)During Defensive Tactics (DT), Agents review pressure point control, handcuffing, baton techniques, weapon retention, less than lethal weapons, takedowns, and team tactics. Use of force policies are reviewed to ensure that each Agent accomplishes lawful objectives only using the amount of force which is reasonable and necessary. Agents are required to demonstrate proficiency on an annual basis throughout their career.

| Additional TrainingOngoing training opportunities are provided to all PPP staff. In addition to the Agent Training Track, PPP also offers professional development opportunities to all positions at the Department. Courses are developed or revised based on Agency needs, statutory requirements, and emerging trends in order to exceed standards within the Community Corrections profession.
